It all started ok ..... although it was cold, the sun was shining, the evil cows were mooing by the back fence, and the Blue Tits were swarming round the bird feeder, darting this way and that.
"Shall we take Naughty George for a long walk?" I asked Izzy, knowing full well what the answer would be.
"Awww, do we have to? I want to play on my Nintendo," came the reply.
"Yes we do have to. And if you argue, I'm going to lob you over the fence," I said (I am like Supernanny).
"Ooooookaaay," Izzy acquiesced, begrudgingly making her way to the kitchen and putting her wellies on.
Five minutes later we were walking down the road like a camel train. There was Naughty George up front dragging one arm forward. I was in the middle, and with my second arm I dragged Izzy along behind me ..... shuffling and complaining about missing Nintendo time.
Disaster struck as soon as we reached the gate to the first field. Naughty George was in particularly high spirits, bouncing around like a puppy, and instead of waiting for the gate to be opened, he excitedly tried to dive under the adjacent fence.
I heard a massive 'yelping' sound and turned to see Naughty George looking pretty stunned. Basically because he is 16/17 years old, his eyesight wasn't keeping up with his body and he had badly misjudged the gap under the fence and had ran full pelt into the barbed-wire keeps.
I ran over to him, and immediately realised that his injury was pretty bad. It was his head and face, The cut extended from the top of his head down his nose, and it had gone right through his skin so that I could see the bone beneath. I felt sick and panicky, but bizarrely, NG didn't seem to register his injury for a while, and the vet later told me that adrenalin kicks in with injuries like this.
I made the decision to take him straight home and luckily on the way, I bumped into a acquaintance who lives in the village.
"Naughty George is hurt!" I shouted to him (in a bit of an upset, teary way. I am probably going to be labelled the village nutter from now on).
He surveyed NG's injuries and said that I needed to take him to a vet immediately, and gave me a telephone number of one that was open on a Sunday.
Ten minutes later, I bundled NG and Izzy in to the bling-mobile and we were on our way to the veterinarian's surgery. Twenty minutes later we were ushered into the veterinarian's consulting room.
"That's a very nasty cut," vet lady said after examining him. And then she added, "because he is so old, I think it is unwise to administer any anaesthetic."
Uh oh. All vets fall into this trap.
"I know he's old, but he is bloody strong and you won't be able to do anything unless you sedate him," I said.
"We'll give it a go," she replied, winking at me. Uh oh.
Suffice to say, she quickly realised that she was onto a loser after she'd wrestled with him for 20 minutes, despite the fact that NG had received three shots of Pethidine.
So then she gave him four shots of anaesthetic ......and nothing. As a final straw, an assistant was called in to try and hold him down. But he was still fighting to get off the vet's table. That's my boy.
But the good news is that she finally managed to get enough drugs into him to stitch him up properly.
And even better, Naughty George is back home after the trauma.
Pic.No.1 This is Naughty George with his injury .... it looks loads better now that it has been stitched up. I was proper scared. The scar was about three inches long
Pic.No.2 Ever since he injured himself, Naughty George has stuck close by my side which is cool with me
So, after taking him to the Emergency Veterinary today, I have to take him to the regular Vet tomorrow to make sure that he doesn't get an infection in his injury ...... wish me luck dahlink .... I am worried about the little chap .........
P.S. How has your week gone?
Get well soon NG you big divver.
ReplyDeletePoor Naughty George. On the other hand, all the other dogs in the neighborhood are going to see his scar and think he's a real bad ass. So sorry your boy was hurt. Give him a pat for me and sending a hug to you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrid thing to happen to NG, and awful for you and Izzy too. I hope he recovers OK. My old dog hates vets too. He has to have a muzzle on. I really would like his teeth checked no chance without a full knockout! Give the old fella a hug from me.
ReplyDeletePs we are lunching in Headington tomorrow....come and join ?
Oh my...NG...you don't need attention like this at all, sweetie! So happy you are home and snuggling with Mommy and Izzy....next time put on your bifocals, please!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little we had a dog the double of naughty George, along the way he ate some poison and had to be put down for whatever, and died. This was 60 odd years ago. I dont comment much on your posts tho they always make me laugh, as you are far more sophisticated than me! But I love your dog. So I had to comment and hope he recovers.
ReplyDeletePoor NG. That musta been horrific to witness. I'm so glad it wasn't any worse. Please give him a big snuggle for me. Now I'm going to go pet the pack.
ReplyDeleteAW! Annie! Poor NG! He looks pitiful. So good that you were able to act quickly Annie. Give him a big but gentle hug for us. Sophie sends him her bestest lick!! and before you know it, he'll be cruising around town showing off his scar! Take care.
ReplyDeleteJim
OMG, when I read your title my heart sunk. You know I have a thing for your Darling George. Let us know what the regular vet says. Poor baby. I am so thankful it wasn't worse than what it was.
ReplyDeleteAwww...poor baby (that's you not NG). How are you holding up? How is Izzy holding up?
ReplyDeletePoor NG...he looks so not cheeky in these pics! =( All cleaned up the cut looks like the vet did a good job sewing him up. Did she put him on any antibiotics to prevent any kind of infection? Give him a snuggle for me...shouldn't be hard since he's sticking close for some proper fussing! <3
phew thanks god for that poor chap!!
ReplyDeleteOh no George... sending you kisses and hugs NG...xxx Glad your mummy found a vet open xx
ReplyDeleteFrick, there is nothing worse then when your animals maim themselves. Here's wishing for a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteI love how everyone cares for NG! I love him too and hope he recovers uneventfully (but I hope your vet gives him a round of antibiotics "just in case". Good for you for being such a good doggy caregiver! Hope you had a glass of something to calm for nerves later in the day!
ReplyDeleteAww, poor little fella. Give him plenty of TLC and I'm sure he'll recover soon and it won't be long before he features in your blog once again as "a git of the highest order..."
ReplyDeleteGive my love to NG! We do get so attached to them don't we!!! X
ReplyDeletePete docker
Give my love to NG! We do get so attached to them don't we!!! X
ReplyDeletePete docker
Awww thanks Pete, I will. He's not looking as forlorn today x
ReplyDelete_____
Thanks Mash. I've been looking after the little fella. Despite the fact he must have one helluva headache today, he still managed to woof vacuously at the guys who are fitting my new windows. I'm sure he will be back to being a git of the highest order, sooner than I anticipate!!
ReplyDelete_____
Hiya Anne, yes I hope he recovers ok, it's a worry because he is such an old git. But he seems a lot perkier today. He even managed some woofs for no apparent reason which is a good sign. He had a shot of antibiotics at the vet, one of about 10 injections for various things. No wonder he looked a bit dopey yesterday!
ReplyDelete_____
Awww, thanks Mrs T. It was bloody horrible, I felt sick to the stomach when I saw his head. The vet seemed pretty good, so I am hoping he is going to be ok.
ReplyDelete_____
I know, it was a good job I met the guy in the village, I wouldn't have had a clue where to take him otherwise. Poor NG x
ReplyDelete_____
Awww poor NG! I'm glad you were able to find a vet open on a Sunday! I agree,
ReplyDeletelots of treats and love will heal him up quick!
I know Michele, I was lucky I bumped into the chap in the village who know about a 24hr vet. Phew!
ReplyDelete_____
Hiya stranger - how are you doing? I know, he was bloody lucky considering .... !
ReplyDelete_____
Eh up Jewell! Crikey, it was pretty awful yesterday, I was really shaky after it. I took Izzy in to see NG have his stitches but she was pretty squeamish and didn't want to watch. He had about 10 injections - painkillers, anaesthetics, and ....... antibiotics! He is looking a lot perkier today which is a real relief!
ReplyDelete_____
Thanks Cheryl, you are right, he is pretty lucky really - the cut went all the way down between his eyes! It took about an hour to clean him up and the vet did a really good job with his stitches.
ReplyDelete_____
NG thanks Sopie for the lick! Poor chap though ... he absolutely was pitiful. Not only did he cut his head open, he had to go to the vets and he hates it. Hopefully it will heal quickly and he will be cruising round Forest Hill with his latest scar!
ReplyDelete_____
Crikey Michele, it was bloody horrible. It looked so much worse before the vet got to him. He is chilling and honking in his basket as we speak!
ReplyDelete_____
Hiya Jill, thanks for stopping by, I love it when you comment. Crikey, that is awful that your dog got poisoned. How did that happen? Thanks for your wishes for NG - he is looking a bit perkier this morning ...... in fact he has just started woofing again at the blokes fitting the windows!!
ReplyDelete_____
Crikey, you are right Ron, he needs his eyes to keep up with his body a bit better! He nearly gave me a heart attack.
ReplyDelete_____
Greetings Frances, ah, so your mutt hates vets too? It's a bit of a palaver taking them isn't it? How old is your dog? Lunch in Headington sounds lovely, but I am not sure I can make it because I have got the builders in today fitting new windows. If you let me know where and when, I will try and weedle it!!! Thanks for the invite ;-)
ReplyDelete_____
LOL, yeh, he is gonna be the bad ass of the neighbourhood! I know you have had trauma of your own with your dobbin being poorly. I am so glad he's feeling better now ....
ReplyDelete_____
He's a nob. He always devises new ways to try and give me a heart attack. He nearly bloody succeeded this time. Poor chap.
ReplyDelete_____
Oh, that's awful Annie. But I'm glad he's feeling perkier today.
ReplyDeleteOuch! Poor scrap. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteIt's just as well I wasn't there, I'd have panicked seeing an injury. Well done for getting him seen too. I expect you have the emergency vet's number locked in your phone now?
ReplyDeleteJust phoned my boy, and he says he wants to go to the " Black Boy" in Headington. We shall be there about 1 ish...just pop in for a drink at least if you can, it would be lovely to meet you. Leaving here in about half an hour. Hope NG is Ok today.ps if you can email me before we leave I can give you my phone no.
ReplyDeleteBlack Boy? Nice choice! I shall try my very best to get over. It's mayhem here with the new windows. I just got straight after the move and now another big clean-up is looming!
ReplyDelete_____
Blimey yeh, it wasn't a sight for anyone who is squeamish! Actually, I haven't put the vet's number in my phone. Good thinking Toff!
ReplyDelete_____
Awww thanks for that. The little fella is looking a lot more lively today. He must have one helluva headache though!
ReplyDelete_____
Hiya, blimey, yes it was bloody horrible. But he is looking happier today. He's even managed to bark at the chaps fitting my new windows!
ReplyDelete_____
Nice blog
ReplyDeleteParfum pas cher
So very sorry to read about NG. No fun. At least he's laying low at his cool new home.
ReplyDeletePoor Naughty George. You give him a hug from me. Animals do give owners shocks sometimes by their actions, trust your pulse is back to normal now!!!
ReplyDeleteOh no... poor Naughty George!!! You will be a great nursemaid for him....!
ReplyDeleteIt is terrifying to pet parents when something happens to our family. I hope Naughty George recovers quickly. In the meantime, he probably would enjoy some peanut butter and a hug!
ReplyDeleteYes of course - Anderson swallowed an earring didn't he - poor chap. But peanut butter? Really?! LOL I've never heard of that one before!
ReplyDelete_____
Oh ya, all of our dogs LOVE peanut butter! Just a little bit, though.
ReplyDeleteBlimey, I'll have to give that one a go Crazy Kevin! ;-)
ReplyDelete_____
Hi, lovely to have found your blog. Poor old Naughty George...hope he's feeling better. Our last dog lived til he was 17. NG is looking remarkably good for his age!
ReplyDeleteBless him - hope he's recovering nicely now. Do you think he learned anything though? Or is this one new trick too far?
ReplyDeletePoor, Poor NG! You're such a good dog mom. Way to go! (you're also a good human mom, just so you know). Not to be insensitive about NG, I really am happy he's feeling better, but ummmm. . . .what are blue tits. R they real tits that are blue or is this some strange british colloquilism that we americans are unfamiliar with. Do tell. FYI - I'm not opposed to blue tits. As long as they are not on my body. Or anywhere near me. Just thought I'd let you know.
ReplyDeleteLOL you daft git - a Blue Tit is a little bird! For the first time ever, I have not used a strange British colloquialism!
ReplyDelete_____
Hi Claire, lovely to have you stop by and comment! NG seems to have got back to his old self. He's woofing vacuously and trailing-in muddy pawprints every time he goes outside (about 3 times an hour). What dog did you have? You are right, NG is as fit as a fiddle, and bombs around at full pelt, but his eyesight isn't quite keeping up with his body!
ReplyDelete_____
Poor NG!!! He is so cute!!! I hope he is doing okay!!!
ReplyDeletePut it on the top of his nose for about a half-hour of your amusement! I promise it will make you laugh! And will piss NG off.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie, ours was a Border Collie crossed with a Jack Russell (and apparently his Mum was the Border...he obviously had a determined randy father!!) He was just the best dog in the world...Border intelligence but the size of a Russell. He went deaf and lost most of his sight along with his marbles in his last year bless him...
ReplyDeleteHe got loads of love .... and pets...... and treats ..... and I have nursed him back into being a git!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteOnly just Robert ...... it was bleedin' awful, but glad to say the git is back to normal. Huzzar!
ReplyDeleteEh up Annie .... yeh, it was pretty distressing, but the git has recovered well and is currently vomiting over my spring bulbs ...... awwww.
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty impressive for a mutt. Now, if he were a greyhound, like my clumsy goffo dog Jeffie, I'd understand the severity of the wound, because greyhound skin rips so easily. But mutts' skin isn't supposed to!
ReplyDeleteYou don't think he has greyhound in him do you?
Nah. Although his snout is quite long, and he's sitting sideways in a kind of greyhound-y way, and his legs are quite long too .. uh ... well, maybe he does! That would explain it. Yep, a GSD x greyhound + a bit of terrier would explain EVERYTHING! ;)
